THUMBS UP

Thumbs up this week to Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman who introduced a Private Members Bill in the Ontario legislature designed to prohibit government funding of incitement to hatred. Organizations in violation of this act after receipt of government funding would have to repay the full amount and could receive severe fines.

“Racial intolerance and misunderstanding is at the crux of conflicts – be it here in Ontario, in Canada or in the Middle East. Framing a rally, protest or public demonstration using hate-filled terminology only serves to hinder the goals of that demonstration. Shurman explained, adding, “. . . I believe there should be limits on what is appropriate for the Ontario government to fund.”

News Corner:

SPOTLIGHT ON

In the run-up to Spirit of Hope 2011 FastForward will profile the speakers and supporters of FSWC’s signature event. Today we feature a Q & A with a canvasser who has been actively involved with our organization in a variety of leadership positions for many years and continues her volunteer efforts as a Canvasser for Spirit of Hope.

Dr. Carole Gruson-Goldberg

FF: As a canvasser, what is the most important message you want to share?

Dr. G-G: I want to raise awareness about Friends of Simon Wiesenthal and help people understand how important the association is, and the urgency of ensuring our message of tolerance and social justice is heard by as many people as possible. FSWC deals with global issues and, especially during these trying times when anti-Semitism is becoming worse, our efforts are needed more than ever. FSWC works hard to combat these issues globally and help the community at large and it’s important for me to be part of that effort.

FF: Why did you decide to take on the role of canvasser?

Dr. G-G: Dr. Rose Rahmani approached me and encouraged me to attend Doctor4Wiesenthal events. I also started receiving newsletters from FSWC and from Avi and I saw the amazing efforts the Center is involved in and the hard work you do on behalf of the Jewish community. I knew I wanted to be a part of the organization.

FF: What is the one message you’d like to share with our readers?

Dr. G-G: Become involved! If you don’t have time to be a canvasser, you can still support the organization through your attendance at Spirit of Hope. We must not be complacent. We must be pro-active to ensure the safety and security of Jews around the world.  We cannot let another Holocaust happen again.

The following comment was posted on the FSWC YouTube channel:

The insight I've gained from subscribing to S.W. has not only helped me and my family understand the Holocaust and what hate can do in moving people to be so evil towards others, but these lessons help in dealing with life. Respecting a person's God given rights, their faith and customs is so very important.
