At the Museum of Tolerance

Tools for Tolerance® for Law Enforcement:
Changing Role of Law Enforcement – Cultural Diversity ('Tools 1')

The Changing Role of Law Enforcement is the core 2-day law enforcement program designed to explore the evolving role of law enforcement in a rapidly changing and increasingly diverse society. Participants are introduced to new models, including "Soldier to Educator," through which to view issues of diversity and to hone ethical decision-making skills. The goal of the Tools for Tolerance® for Law Enforcement program is to assist law enforcement professionals, as front line service providers, explore the evolving role of law enforcement in an increasingly democratic and diverse society.

Specific objectives include:

  • Employing the impactful, inter-active learning experience of the Museum of Tolerance in order to expose the dynamics of racism and bigotry, prejudice and discrimination in both an historic and contemporary context;
  • Engaging participants in a facilitated discussion around issues of tolerance, diversity, personal values and responsibility, and their relevance to the work of a police officer; and
  • Increasing participants' awareness of the evolving role of law enforcement and the tools necessary for an effective response.

This program includes an interactive virtual learning experience segment (Perspectives on Profiling - Tool for Police Effectiveness or a Weapon of Bias?) delivered on CD-ROM examining racial profiling. It compels users to make critical choices in testing situations. Unique to this product is the ability to see the outcome of the user's choices and evaluate their consequences. This cutting edge training tool moves officers into a new paradigm of thought on the subject of racial profiling. It is sensitive to the challenges that face Law Enforcement both in reality and in the management of public perception. The product is founded on a robust ethical perspectives projected into real life situational choices.

This unique training tool confronts a number of complex issues that surround the debate on racial profiling:

  1. The confusion surrounding:
    • Criminal profiling
    • Racial profiling
    • Racism
  2. The myth that statistics prove that an individual member of a specific racial group is more likely to commit a given crime than anyone else.
  3. The dangerous trend of police disengagement from potentially sensitive suspects to avoid accusations of racial profiling or selective engagement to satisfy quotas.
