Statement

Toronto(October 7, 2019) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is concerned over a recent incident involving hate vandalism targeting a political candidate – this time in Fort McMurray.

On Friday, hateful posters featuring racist messages and swastikas were reportedly found on the door of the campaign office of Maggie Farrington, who is running in the riding of Fort McMurray-Cold Lake.

“Regardless of a person’s political views, attacking candidates in such a manner is unacceptable and un-Canadian,” said FSWC president and CEO Avi Benlolo. “The current Canadian election has been fraught with more antisemitism and racism than our organization has ever seen before. Hopefully, these incidents serve as a wake-up call that more must be done by our political leaders to counter and prevent such hate in our communities.”

This incident follows other recent incidents in Quebec, British Columbia and New Brunswick where election signs were vandalized with swastikas.
