Media Statement

Toronto (December 7, 2018) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is deeply disappointed in the UN’s failure to approve a US-led resolution condemning Hamas, but commends Canada for joining 86 other member states in standing up against the terrorist group.

The resolution, which was voted on yesterday and required a two-thirds majority, was rejected by a vote of 87 in favour, 57 against and 33 abstentions. It condemned Hamas for “repeatedly firing rockets into Israel and for inciting violence, thereby putting civilians at risk” as well as for using resources in Gaza to build military infrastructure, including tunnels, to infiltrate Israel.

“The world now knows which countries are in support of terrorism and Hamas’s efforts to put the lives of innocent Israeli civilians at risk,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “Despite the UN’s failure to pass this important resolution, for the first time in UN history a majority of countries condemned Hamas and its acts of terrorism – a positive step following years of the UN ignoring the terrorist group’s actions.”
