Media Statement

Toronto (March 20, 2019) - In an effort to combat antisemitism, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) commends MPP Roman Baber on his introduction of a bill that will give power to the Speaker to restrict hateful events on the grounds of Ontario’s legislature.

“This is an important tool meant to fight antisemitism, hate and intolerance,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “Over the years, a group promoting ‘Al Quds Day’ has used the property of the legislature to push its agenda of hate and intolerance against the Jewish community. This sends a strong message to its organizers that this kind of behaviour is no longer welcome at the legislature.”

In a statement released today, MPP Baber said, “Freedom of speech does not give anyone the right to promote hate or violence. Such acts compromise our identity as Canadians and should not be permitted to take place at Queen’s Park.”

FSWC applauds this effort and commends all MPPs who have supported it, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

The bill passed its first reading this afternoon.
