Yesterday afternoon, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) welcomed Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce and Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism Michael Ford on FSWC’s Tour for Humanity mobile human rights education centre, just days ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Tour for Humanity was at King City Public School for a full day of workshops. The ministers joined students in grades 7 and 8 as educator Louise Puevas delivered an interactive workshop, titled The Holocaust: Then and Now, focusing on the history and lessons of the Holocaust. FSWC Board Chair Fred Waks, York Region District School Board (YRDSB) Associate Director of Education - Leadership and Schools Tod Dungey and YRDSB Chair Ron Lynn were also in attendance.

During a media scrum outside the bus, the ministers and FSWC President and CEO Michael Levitt underlined the importance of Holocaust education and the value of resources such as Tour for Humanity in helping educate students and inspire them to stand up against hate.

FSWC thanks Minister Lecce and Minister Ford for visiting the Tour for Humanity and for their strong support of the education work FSWC does every day. We are also appreciative of the YRDSB for partnering with us to bring the Tour for Humanity bus to schools across York Region. We thank all schools, including King City PS, that ensure their students learn about – and from – the Holocaust and gain the tools to be human rights advocates in their communities.
