Dear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:
CC: The Hon. Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs
Marco Mendicino, MP
Michael Levitt, MP
As a Canadian, I am disheartened by your position on the recent violence in Gaza. In your statement of May 16, 2018, you fail to condemn Hamas for attacking Israel.
As you are aware, Hamas is recognized by Canada as a terrorist group. It is a fact that the group and its followers are determined to enter Israel by breaching its border fence or tunneling underneath it. Hamas' stated objective is to murder Israelis and attempt to occupy the land and march on Jerusalem.
Sure enough, since 2007 when Hamas violently took control of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority, it has fired over 10,000 rockets at Israel - and in particular small towns and villages in the surrounding area.
In 2014, Israel discovered 32 tunnels under its border built by Hamas to infiltrate Israel and carry out terrorist attacks. Dozens more have been uncovered in the last twelve months.
While I despair about all loss of life, rather than threatening Israel, a sovereign nation defending its borders, with an "immediate independent investigation", this threat should be aimed at Hamas.
I can only hope that as Prime Minister of Canada - if the time ever came - that you would protect our cities and towns from people who may wish us violent harm.
Hamas is a terrorist organization with a history of war crimes against Israel and its own people. It is a fanatical group whose stated charter is the destruction of Israel. Hamas is an oppressive dictatorship. It does not practice freedom, rights and democracy, values we espouse as Canadians.
Mr. Prime Minister: I join friends of Israel in asking you to reconsider your position about Hamas and respect the right and sovereignty of the State of Israel.
